PTIS International School
2009 Grade 5 PYP Exhibition

Tuesday 31 March was a very special day for twenty-four Grade 5 students. After a number of weeks of inquiring, experimenting, surveying, interviewing and researching it was time to present.

Grade 5 held their PYP Exhibition from 9.00am until 2.30pm. Not only did they talk about their work in their Exhibition groups, but they put on a performance (twice) showing work that they had developed with their specialist under the theme of ‘Sharing the Planet’.

The students had all worked with the Central Idea ‘Sharing the Planet begins with ME’ and looked into a number of topics from water pollution to air pollution and recycling to saving energy.

With the help of teacher mentors, each group of three or four students, devised questions and worked to find the answers in and around Chiang Mai. They were real risk-takers when presenting, showing confidence, commitment and cooperation in order to communicate their knowledge in a clear and appropriate manner.

As part of the follow-up action the students were the ‘experts’ on Earth Day (22 April). They helped lead class activities by presenting the information they had researched to different classes.

  Exhibition Reflections - By Jim

I think I worked well with my group. I told my group about the questions and we decided who was going to find the answers and how. I shared most of my tasks with my mentor A. Jeremy and my group. We all had a discussion.

I liked working with my mentor A. Jeremy, because mostly he made the other people listen to my ideas and suggestions. We worked well with our mentor but sometimes one of my groups didn’t work or didn’t listen to what the mentor said. I helped my group find answers for our questions. I interviewed A. Candy to answer the questions.

There weren’t many problems. The only problem was we didn’t finish our questions for the board game in time. I enjoyed making my board game and putting pictures on the display board.

On the Exhibition day I explained about how we recycle at PTIS to the visitors. I explained how to play the board game. The board game went well. A lot of visitors liked to play the board game.

The pictures went well and the explanation went well too. But sometimes the explaining to the visitors was difficult, because sometimes some people asked some hard questions that we could not answer.

My favorite part of the Exhibition was teaching the visitors how to play my board game and explaining about the recycle center. But I still think we could have done our explanation better. I think the Exhibition made me a better learner.

 Exhibition Reflections - By Earn-Earn

We started our Exhibition on Monday 2nd February 2009. We did homework to decide our topic and decide who is in the group. Once we knew members and the topic, we worked on the compass and the concepts.

Every Tuesday lesson 8 we had mentor meeting with Aj. Nic. We spent lots of time on our research and typed our work. I thought that we did very well. We told Aj. Jane our task, mainly Tony did the scarecrow, Rose did the board game and I did the typing, mounting pictures and the water cycle.

I thought we shared tasks very well and everyone was responsible for their work but we had some problems such as the printing not being printed by the due date. I really enjoyed our mentor meetings, I found it really fun and we did a lot of work during the period. Our group did really well with our mentor. I thought that I worked well with my mentor because I finished work on time and I helped Rose with the board game.

I helped my group by doing the water cycle, writing pieces, drawing, mounting and helped Rose with board game. I think that I did lots of work. I enjoyed doing and I learnt lots of things in my inquiry and it was very interesting. We went to the farm to learn what the farm used instead of chemicals. I liked to share my knowledge with the lower grades what I’ve learnt during the Exhibition and made a poster to tell people not to burn leaves.

I thought the Exhibition went very well because a lot of people came and listened to us and played our board game. My favorite part was the performance because lots of people came and they enjoyed the show and we didn’t make any mistakes.

I thought that the difficult part was when lots of people came and a lot of questions were asked and my group couldn’t really answer them at the same time because Rose was doing the board game so there was only me and Tony.

I think the Exhibition has made me a better learner because it make me think and plan really well, my group and I learnt to organize our self and finish work on time.

  Exhibition Reflections - By Ai

Exhibition was fun. My topic was garbage. I enjoyed my topic because I chose it and I wanted to inquire into it. It was interesting how people can reuse things and it’s very easy, but they don’t do it. They spend money to buy things and pollute the world.

I learned so much on my topic and how I can do something, just a little, to help the world. My group was good, very good, but we only had one problem. We didn’t share ideas very much. Our group cooperated and always shared tasks equally. I think we should have helped each other more, but I liked being in this group.

My mentor was Ajarn Lucy. She was very nice. She helped us with lots of things, but I didn’t like her when she made us change something that we worked on, and I didn’t like having mentor meetings on Friday because if we worked on something all week, we needed to change it.

On the Exhibition day, we did quite well. The game and the performance went really well, but it could have been better if we had made our display more interesting and showed more resources. It was hard standing all day long.

I think I made a good effort. I always did my work and not play. I tried to do my best.

The Exhibition made me a better learner because it taught me how to display things, print things, organize, and group work. I learned a lot from the Exhibition.

I kind of enjoyed my topic because I wanted to know why people use plastic bags, what is a plastic bag made of and how long does a plastic bag take to decompose or disintegrate. I found few things interesting. One of them were there are 3 billion (3,000,000,000) plastic bags used everyday in China.

I found doing research, making a decomposition timeline and putting the information on the board fun. I learnt that it takes 10~20 years for a plastic bag to decompose. I don’t want to learn anything more about my topic because I’ve learnt enough.

To take action about my topic I can take my cloth bags to shopping, reuse plastic bags and make something out of plastic bags.

My mentor was A.Sandy. My mentor helped me planning. I liked having a mentor when she gave me some ideas. I disliked having a mentor when she says “how are you going to do this?” and many other hard questions to answer.

For some of the work I put in enough time with big effort and some of them I took too much time to put big effort in those works.

My group kind of did well on Exhibition day. Our group didn’t really explain until people had some questions. The things that went bad were our group didn’t speak clearly, slow and confidently. Also when people asked us questions, some of them we couldn’t answer them because we didn’t know the answer to the questions. Things that went well were people were interested in decomposition, the timeline and the board game.

The exhibition helped me become a better learner because I can get a lot of information from research. I also realized that sometimes you can get better information from the books than getting information from internet sites.
